Redundancy means the additional existence of functionally equal or comparable system resources that are not required during trouble-free operation. The objective of redundant measuring systems is to increase a system's functional reliability and safeguarding against failures. From a technical viewpoint, there are different options to establish redundant measuring systems.
The simplest form of redundancy is the independent parallel operation of two or more sensors. However, some applications have limited space. In these cases, rotary encoders of series GEL 290 with integrated bearings have proved successful. By means of various bus covers, they allow flexible upgrading to a redundant measuring system that combines incremental as well as absolute measurement.
The so-called tandem encoders of series 290 feature a high-resolution incremental output for speed acquisition. In parallel, the absolute rotary encoder records measured parameters such as speed, acceleration or position, and transfers them via a fieldbus interface to the higher level control or safety system. The great advantage of the modular design - in addition to real redundancy - is the possibility to combine different analogue and digital output signals in one rotary encoder system in optimal length. Due to the combination of different measuring systems, this is also referred to as diverse redundancy, since systematic errors can be detected during operation.
A very good application example for redundant measuring systems is the monitoring of the rotational speed of the drive train in wind turbines. For reasons of system safety, fast and safe rotor overspeed detection is of crucial importance to allow for timely counter measures.
Basically it is also possible to combine two incremental rotary encoders to one tandem encoder. Furthermore,
Lenord + Bauer also manufactures redundant rotary encoders with integrated resolver. These are, for example, the series GEL 2035 and GEL 2037.
Here you will find an overview of our redundant rotary encoders. We would be pleased to advise you which form of redundancy is best suited for your application.
