Most multi-purpose greases are lithium greases, meaning that their main ingredients are mineral oil and lithium soap. They have NLGI grade 2 consistency, meaning that they can be used in hand-operated grease pumps conventionally used by greasers as part of lubrication programs, which set the lubrication intervals for mechanical components. There are also semi-fluid greases (NLGI grade 00) that can be used in centralized lubrication systems.
